Flanagan Jr. papers include: personal records and correspondence relating to the 11th Airborne Division operations in WWII in the Pacific theater (New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon, Los Banos raid and Nadzab jump); extensive source material for a book on Los Banos raid; official documents and correspondence concerning participation of 3rd Battalion, 187th Airborne in Operation Just Cause, Panama (including conflicting perspectives) and 101st Airborne Division in Desert Shield/Storm. Includes manuscript histories about the 45th Parachute Field Artillery by John Conable and on WWII operations of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment by Jerry Riseley. Some material concerning women in combat, papers pertaining to visit of President Kennedy to U.S. Army Europe in 1963, efficiency reports and many photos are also found within the collection.

Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat.
